What is a mother plant?

BAC-Online-moederplant.jpg03 août

The mother plant is the most important plant in your nursery. This plant provides the cuttings that produce the next generation of plants. The mother plant therefore needs to be looked after particularly well. In this article, we tell you how you can provide your mother plant with the best care.

Ensure good hygiene

Prevent stress and disease in the mother plant, otherwise it will not have enough energy for optimal flowering. Good hygiene is an important factor in this regard. Always use clean equipment when you take cuttings so you do not transfer pathogens to the mother plant.

Select an additional mother plant

The mother plant requires a great deal of energy to produce cuttings. We therefore recommend that you select an additional mother plant. Determining whether a plant is suitable as a mother plant is done through trialling. Select a few young plants and take cuttings before the pre-flowering phase. Our labels help you identify which cutting comes from which plant. Once the cuttings flower, you can see which are the best and healthiest plants. That way, you identify which plant is suitable as a mother plant. Moreover, only female plants can serve as mother plants. It is therefore also necessary to know what the female version of your plant looks like.

Use growth nutrients, bloom nutrients and root stimulator

The mother plant is always in the growth phase. That is to say, the leaves and stems keep growing continually. We recommend that you use products that support optimal growth of the mother plant. Products that produce the best result:

  • Leaf nutrients: this makes the plant stronger and the leaves turn green and thicker more quickly. Harmful fungi and bacteria are less likely to infest your plant.
  • Growth nutrients: this product meets all the mother plant’s needs during the growth phase. It produces an even better result when used in combination with the root stimulator.
  • Root stimulator: this makes the root environment more resistant to soil borne diseases. The roots can also absorb nutrients more effectively because it stimulates the growth of beneficial micro-organisms in the medium.
